Under the Education Reform (NI) Order 1989, all children must be educated free of charge for anything which is part of the planned curriculum. If there are ‘optional’ extras e.g. Theatre visits, exhibitions etc. then the pupils will be asked for a contribution. These ‘optional extras’ are not part of the planned curriculum; therefore failure to participate will not disadvantage pupils in any way in terms of the formal curriculum or examinations. The Board of Governors recognises its entitlement to make a charge for materials used in Home Economics and Technology & Design, provided that the finished product is recognised as the property of the parent. Parents are responsible for the replacement of books and equipment that are lost, damaged or destroyed and for any reports that are necessary in the event of damage by their child.
